To UCSC administrators, to UC administrators,
as a UCSC alumna (2014) I urge you to give in to the demands of the brave and righteous students protesting for Gaza at UCSC right now. In light of the persistence, heinousness, impunity and your support for the ongoing Zionist crimes, blocking normal university proceedings is completely appropriate. It is in your power to meet the demands of the protestors and thereby move the university forward to another form again.
The time for Zionist atrocity is up! All over the world Palestinians and their supporters are resisting by the millions. In your own interest, and also to avoid more senseless violence, stop obstructing justice. Stop normalizing and covering up and financing and otherwise supporting Zionist crimes!
DIVEST from the Israeli occupation NOW! A tipping point is in the making where all serious financial actors are going to hurry to divest in silence, not because they suddenly care about human rights, but because they don't want to be left sitting on their worthless shares and bonds. They would rather sell them in time when they are still worth some money. What are you waiting for?
Nobody is fooled any more by the lies the US imperial elite is telling about how brutalizing Palestine is fighting antisemitism and how Palestinian resistance is terrorism and how US imperial interests are good for the world, so don't embarrass yourself and go there. And don't go down the road of letting the cops take care of your students either. It would only further expose the moral bankruptcy of what you would be choosing, once again, to stand for.
The student protestors have taken the lead in the university and you should be grateful for them having worked out the demands that you merely have to follow. They are leading your way and telling you how to take a step in this global unstoppable wave for the liberation of Palestine.
Palestine will be free!
Johanna Rothe, UCSC alumna 2014
I e-mailed this letter on May 30 2024 and received no response. Few days later the UCSC management called a massive police operation to the campus. Despite many arrests students have managed to uphold their protests. For more information follow them on @ucsc_encampment on instagram. Also of interest: the statement by UCSC Faculty for Justice in Palestine.
